An Odishan wedding is a sequence of rituals, each with its own meaning — and jewellery is present at nearly every one. It is not an accessory to the ceremony. It is part of the ceremony.
Adornment as blessing
The bride’s jewellery is chosen with care by her family, often across generations. Pieces are passed down, added to, and worn again — each one carrying the memory of the women before her.
The heirloom continues
This is why we speak of jewellery as a witness. It is present at the beginning of a marriage, and it remains long after — worn again by a daughter, and then a granddaughter.
